SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series created by the late Stephen Hillenburg. It follows the adventures of the titular character: An optimistic and enthusiastic anthropomorphic sea sponge named SpongeBob. Other main characters of the show include Patrick Star, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks, and Plankton who serves as the antagonist. The show takes place in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom, inhabited by anthropomorphic sea creatures.
SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999, and currently consists of twelve seasons and over 200 episodes. Since its premiere, the show (mainly the first three seasons) received high ratings and universal critical acclaim, becoming a huge media franchise for Nickelodeon. It currently holds the record of the longest running original animated series on the network.
The success of the show spawned three feature films: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015), and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020). Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, a computer-animated spin-off series, debuted in March 2021 on the streaming service, Paramount+. The Patrick Star Show, a spin-off series focusing on Patrick, will premiere on Nickelodeon in July 2021.

Trivia
- SpongeBob was originally going to be named "SpongeBoy," and the series was to be called "SpongeBoy Ahoy!". But these were both changed as the name was already trademarked.
- SpongeBob creator, Stephen Hillenburg, originally wanted to end the show after the first movie, so it wouldn't "jump the shark." But Nickelodeon wanted to keep the show going.
- Stephen Hillenburg previously worked as a writer, producer and storyboard artist for Rocko's Modern Life.
- In select SpongeBob video games, Mr. Krabs and Mermaid Man are voiced by different actors.
- In October 2014, SpongeBob SquarePants was placed at #1 on WatchMojo.com's top ten Nicktoons.
- The show was later placed as an honorable mention on their top ten greatest cartoon series on September 2019.
- After the passing of Stephen Hillenburg in November 2018, the song, "Sweet Victory" (featured in the Season 2: Episode 15 segment, "Band Geeks"), was heavily requested to be played at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show in honor of his memory. But unfortunately, it didn't happen, and was met with negative response from SpongeBob fans and animation enthusiasts in general.
- Despite this, however. A short, newly-animated clip of Squidward introducing the halftime show did make an appearance.
