Pokémon (universe)

Pokémon is a media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and managed by The Pokémon Company, a Japanese consortium between Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures. It centers on the title creatures, which humans, known as Pokémon Trainers, catch and train them to battle each other for sport.

Originally released as a pair of interlinkable Game Boy role-playing video games developed by Game Freak, Pokémon has since become the second-most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo's own Mario franchise. The success of the franchise spawned trading card games, animated television shows and movies, comic books, toys and other media.
