Pac-Man is a video games series by Bandai Namco that stars the titular character. It is one of the most easily recognizable video game series in the world.
The franchise debuted in 1980, when the original Pac-Man was released in Japan on May 22 and in North America on October 26. The game received universal critical acclaim, and has become a huge arcade classic, spawning numerous sequels and spin-offs, various merchandise, TV shows, and even a hit song.
When the original Pac-Man was released, the most popular arcade video games were space shooters, in particular Space Invaders and Asteroids. The most visible minority were sports games that were mostly derivatives of Pong. The original Pac-Man succeeded by creating a new genre and appealing to both genders.
