Mortal Kombat is an American fighting video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, originally developed by Midway Games.

The series has a reputation for high levels of graphic violence, including, most notably, its Fatalities (finishing moves allowing the player to finish off their defeated opponent). Controversies surrounding Mortal Kombat, in part, led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board video game rating system. Early games in this series were also noted for their realistic digitized sprites and an extensive use of palette swapping to create new characters. Following Midway's bankruptcy, the Mortal Kombat development team was acquired by Warner Bros. Entertainment and reestablished as NetherRealm Studios.

The original game, released in arcades in 1992, has spawned many sequels and spin-offs consisting of several action-adventure games, as well as a comic book series, a card game, several movies and TV series, and various merchandise. Mortal Kombat has become one of the most successful video game series in the history, and one of the highest-grossing franchises of all-time.

Trivia

  • The development of the first Mortal Kombat game was originally based on an idea of making a video game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. But as that idea fell through, a fantasy-themed fighting game was created instead.
  • In the SNES and Genesis versions of the original Mortal Kombat, the blood was completely removed and some of the fatalities were altered.
    • However, the Genesis version has a secret code were you can turn the blood on.
  • In 2008, the Mortal Kombat series did a crossover with DC Comics, in the video game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
    • Due to this, the violence and blood had to be toned down, which was not well-received by audiences.
    • Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Raiden would later appear in the Injustice series as playable fighters.
  • In October 2013, Mortal Kombat was placed at #1 on WatchMojo.com's top ten fighting game franchises.
  • At the 2019 Brasil Game Show, Mortal Kombat series co-creator, Ed Boon, stated that he would love to include a guest character from the Street Fighter series in Mortal Kombat 11. However, he doesn't want to "rip off Ryu's head or anything crazy like that."
    • However, it was later revealed that Capcom declined a possible crossover of both series.
