Earthworm Jim is an American video game series that centers on the titular character, Earthworm Jim, an earthworm in a robotic suit who travels through space and battles evil. The series is noted for its platforming and shooting gameplay, surrealist humor, and edgy art style.
Inspired by the success of Sonic the Hedgehog and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, toy company, Playmates, wanted to create a new intellectual property. Doug TenNapel drew a sketch of a cartoon earthworm (who would become Earthworm Jim), and Shiny Entertainment bought the rights.
The series debuted in 1994, when the original Earthworm Jim was released for the SEGA Genesis on August 2 of that year. As of now, the series consists of four games (not counting ports or remakes), with a fifth game currently in development and will be released for the upcoming Intellivision Amico. The series was a mild success and managed to spawn toys, comics and an animated TV series.
In 1995, shortly after the release of Earthworm Jim 2, the rights of the series was acquired by Interplay Entertainment.
